We came across this really cool “heat map” of music consumption for 2010. The results are staggering, most of the boxes were green which meant growth in traffic, it was really interesting to see who the heavy-hitters were. Seems that playlist.com trumps everyone by far with nearly 18 million visits/month, Grooveshark at 10.6 million and Last.fm at 9.8 million. I was surprised at sites like Hypem and Bandcamp that weren’t as highly trafficed as I would’ve anticipated. But the growth is huge.
For an even wider perspective on musical consumption, they zoom out even further to reveal that Youtube kills them all- with a mindblowing 1, 222 million. That’s a billion. A billion people watching music videos on Youtube a month.
In the realm of online magazines and blogs- Rolling Stone and Pitchfork rule. Traffic for Pitchfork doubles Hypem!
You really need to check out this infographic to get a better idea of the online musical landscape from last year.
It’s definitely an exciting time, music is thriving, or at least musical consumption is making a clear and rapid transition into the online world- people are finding and listening to music almost exclusively online it seems.
I’m a music blogger, and my main consumption is directly via some of my favorite niche blogs like Headunderwater, I Guess I’m Floating, Indie Music Filter, Rollo & Grady, and YVYNYL- and the occasional visit to Pitchfork and of course, Hypem. It’s really eye opening to see that I seem to be in the minority. I’d really be interested to see how you consume music on a regular basis- what are your favorite sites? Do you still buy music?
