Last December went by quickly, we managed to pull off our benefit show with a suspicious ease, everyone enthusiastic, everyone cooperative, everyone’s flights in on time. Without hiccup we hosted a dream show with a dream lineup that included the likes of Deer Tick, Guards, Cass McCombs, Blake Mills, Mountain Man and Middle Brother. I invited our friends over at Yours Truly to help us out and they delivered this beautifully intimate video of Middle Brother and Mountain Man singing an acoustic version of “Daydreaming”. Thanks Yours Truly. Special thanks to my friends Chadwick Gantes and Brandon Tauszik for filming.
Speaking of, I’ve been listening to the Middle Brother record non-stop for the past week. Standout tracks include “Wilderness” and “Million Dollar Bill”. It’s exactly what I wanted from the record, each artist taking turns with the lead, making the songs their own- with plenty of defeated love songs, heavy on the country/folk singing, “I’m gonna learn to fly an airplane, I’m gonna make my children proud, I’m gonna make their mom respect me, like when I first showed up in town”. The whole record is pretty light; no traces of tones like Deer Tick’s “Christ Jesus” or Dawes’ “Western Skyline” but I think they’re taking this whole supergroup thing lightheartedly anyway. I think these artists have reached a point where they can almost do no wrong, at least with me.
